Sustainability

Green Team

Our annually elected Green Team meets every week to develop and implement initiatives across the school.  From growing projects, raising awareness and pestering teachers, the group, which includes a representative from every class, have worked hard this year to reduce energy consumption across the school and keep our garden looking lovely.

Energy Use

Energy Sparks is an interactive site that not only allows pupils and adults to monitor our electricity usage but also provides us with lots of great initiatives and actions to help us reduce it.  This year we have reduced our usage by 8% and in doing so saved lots of money.  An energy monitor in each class helps ensure appliances are switched off during lunch breaks and at the end of the day.

Recycling

We will be relaunching recycling across the school in September.  Each class will have a recycling monitor to ensure paper, card, plastics and pens are all recycled.  We will be collecting our breaktime food waste as well as introducing Christmas jumpers and World Book Day second hand sales.

Biodiversity

Whilst we don’t have much green space at the school, the Green Team have tried their best to keep the small garden area looking pretty and helping to increase wildlife in doing so.  A new planter at the front of the school with funding from the Butterfly Conservation Trust will have planting to attract butterflies and moths and support their caterpillars.

Bike Skills

During the spring and summer Reception children participate in balance bike sessions to help develop their passion for cycling and learn important skills for safe riding.

Active Travel workshops

The Active Travel team from Bristol City Council visits each year group over the year to run workshops and assemblies that encourage walking, cycling, scooting, park and striding and the use of public transport for the journey to and from school.  Sessions include Be Bright, Be Seen with Y3, Route Planning for Y6 and Scooter Skills for Y1.

Inspiring Green Futures Workshops

Professionals from UWE’s Inspire Sustainability team run informative workshops for Year 5 and 6 children that explore green jobs and opportunities in the West of England.  Using Top Trump style cards pupils are able to discover the huge range of varied careers that all contribute positively to the environment.

Earth Day

Every year, on the 22nd April, we celebrate this international event to celebrate our wonderful planet and think about how we can do our bit to care for it.

Climate Strategy

The Government made it a requirement for all schools to have a climate strategy by July 2025.  With the help of Lets Go Zero we now have a strategy that will help inform and guide our green initiatives over the next 5 years.
